If you would like to be on a wait list, please email [email protected] with "Wait List" in the subject line.  You will hear from us only if a space opens up by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. You will not hear from us if space does not open up.  We apologize for any inconvenience. With gratitude for everyone's kidness and generosity.       JOIN US FOR THE SAMPLER PLATE OF SYRIAN HOME COOKING THAT WE ARE PREPARING FOR YOU.  We will sit down like a large Syrian family and experience some of the highlights and challenges of moving from Syrian culture to the U.S. Together we will celebrate the success of our two Syrian refugee families and  invest in their next steps toward being at home and successful in U.S. culture. “The two cultures are really quite different,” says our speaker Dr. Raghan Abouasaleh, who grew up in Syria and now practices medicine in Newtown. With stories, slides, and games she will give us a window into the experience of moving between Syria and the U.S. The program will be informative and fun for adults and for school-aged children.  You will have opportunity to visit with the families, be impressed by their improving English, and see a new video of highlights of their second year in the U.S. including driving their own cars, taking on the challenges of employment, and making the outing to Washington, D.C. that is shown in the picture above. _____________________________________________________ FAQs ABOUT THE FAMILIES Who are the families that we are celebrating?Newlyweds Moustafa and Amal fled Aleppo after Moustafa's father was shot while praying on the balcony of their apartment.  They came to the U.S. with their two little girls in November 2016, seeking safety and opportunity for their children.  Moustafa works 50-60 hours a week at an entry-level job to support his family. The children are now safe, happy, and flourishing. The parents are taking English classes and becoming increasingly independent in navigating U.S. culture. After the death of her husband, Weaam and her two boys also fled to Syria.  This brave woman left the familiarity of home and family to seek safety for her sons, now ages 12 and 9.   She has her first paying job ever and has learned to juggle the demands of single parenthood.  Though she has two years of college in Syria, she is unable to document her education.  In addition to working, she is now studying for the GED test to receive a U.S. high school diploma so that she can continue her college education and support her family. How can you invest in the success of these families?Your support provides enrichment opportunities such as tutoring and summer camp, covers unexpected expenses. and stabilizes their finances while they prepare for more adequate employment.
