BRAVE Communities' Conversation + Screening of "Chasing Smoke"

Come join the screening of "Chasing Smoke" followed by a community conversation to discuss ways we can individually and collectively work together to dismantle systemic racism and its impact in our school-to-prison pipeline. Feature Film Award Winner State of Colorado "Chasing Smoke" documents the impact of Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice when implemented in Texas schools and other institutions serving youth. The film examines how our traditional, punitive disciplinary systems often do not lead to positive outcomes among youth and other marginalized populations, as they do not address the root causes of behavior.Doors open at 6:00pm. The documentary will begin promptly at 7:00pm followed by time to share our thoughts, opinions, and personal stories. The documentary does not have an age rating. Youths are welcome with adult supervision. A cash bar will be available from 6:30pm and light snacks will be available after the community conversation. This event is open to the public on a pay-as-you-wish donation (suggestion $5-$100). Proceeds will benefit the BRAVE Young Women’s Leader Program Scholarship. These five high school females will spend one-week at the Rosa Parks Museum's "Architect for Change" summer day camp, as well as visit historic Civil Rights sites and the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, AL for their welcome retreat, and then return back to Austin to attend monthly workshops empowering them to be better community organizers and leaders. They will organize a community-building event in January 2020. For $25+ tax-deductible donations, please RSVP and donate here. This event will also kickoff the upcoming Be the Change Conference, a three-day event engaging educators, law enforcement, faith leaders, community service providers and more around learning how to build community-wide restorative ecosystems. Be the Change will be held on July 15-17th at Huston-Tillotson University. More information about that conference and registration can be found here.
