Fossil Camp

Ages 6-12 (Please note that due to the intensive nature of our camps, we are unable to accommodate children under 6 years of age.) Children will learn about specific geological epochs and the associated dinosaur’s species that dominated at the time. Each day will feature a different time period (Triassic, Jurassic, etc) and include crafts and activities highlighting the day’s lesson. As children become familiar with the full range of extinct species, they will make fossil replicas in the classroom. The budding paleontologists will also spend time outdoors excavating and assembling dinosaur fossils that they find in the sand pit. This camp will include a field trip to the Eco-Discovery Center where students will learn about the local geology and fossil beds. Following the Eco-Discovery Center, the students will visit Fort Taylor where they will explore the park area to find and identify fossils. About instructor Rick Wheeler AKA Deadeye Rick is a renowned Civil War reenactor and volunteer historian at Fort Taylor and Fort Jefferson. He has been involved with educational outreach programs that include living history events, medieval festivals, Civil War Boot Camp and Operation Purple. Deadeye’s Workshop, Rick’s community centered organization, is currently involved in restoration efforts at Fort Taylor and the building of temporary museum displays inside the fort. He is currently working with the Key West Fringe Theater on the production of Hamlet. About instructor Kevin Lisinski Kevin has been working in the field of childcare since he was fourteen years old. He was responsible for the operation of the Community Center and summer program for the Department of Parks and Recreation in Bristol, Rhode Island. Kevin has worked as a behavioral specialist, working primarily with behaviorally-challenged youth in a variety of programs throughout the country. Kevin and his wife moved to Key West in early 2015, having fallen in love with the charm of the island. Kevin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program, understanding numerous techniques and teaching styles as well as having knowledge of countless camp games. Camp Details In addition to registering online, we will require guardians to complete more detailed information for emergency purposes. The ArtCamp! 2019 registration, permission to use images, and Camper Code of Conduct forms will be emailed to you and must be completed before the commencement of camp. Camp starts at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:00 PM. To ensure the comfort of your child throughout the day, we have included a list of essentials. Please pack these items in a beach bag that can be left at the camp. The bags will be kept in a designated storage area. It is important that all items be labeled with your child’s name.
