Let’s play! The entire week will be devoted to what campers love best about summer - outdoor play, water, bubbles, and ice cream! Campers will enjoy classics like Capture the Flag, creative relay races, water balloon challenges, hula hoop contests, Minute to Win It games, scavenger hunts, and so much more! A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and a whole lot of fun designed to kick off summer and encourage skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm. And what’s a week at camp without solar oven s’mores and homemade ice cream, too? Session 2 - FUNdamentals of Art ($245) K - 8th GradeJune 3rd - 7th | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Campers will have the opportunity to do arts and crafts every week they attend “Camp Curious,” but this week campers will dig deeper as we explore creative outlets and sharpen our skills. We’ll spend time outside making Monet-inspired watercolors by the pond and quick gestural sketches of the chickens. Campers will learn about Andy Goldsworthy’s land art, then make sculptures in the landscape using natural materials like rocks and leaves. While we’re outside, we’ll also make pet rocks, test paper airplanes, learn to weave, and work collaboratively on a big chalk mural. We’ll cool off inside while we experiment with bubble painting, make friendship bracelets, and make bowls out of papier-mâché. We’ll be designing and block printing our own t-shirts, too, so please bring a blank one! Session 3 - STEMfest ($245)K - 8th GradeJune 10th - 14th | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.For campers who love hands-on projects, STEMfest will offer some of the coolest science, technology, engineering, and math projects around. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including engineering challenges, science experiments, and math-inspired artwork. We will use problem-solving and creativity to feed our senses, develop critical thinking skills, and most of all, have fun! Session 4 - Forts, Castles, & Treehouses - Oh My! ($245)K - 8th GradeJune 17th - 21st | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Fort-building is a time-honored tradition, and a favorite around St. Francis! Campers will be challenged to make outdoor forts using natural materials found in the woods, then cool off inside while making blanket forts to play in. We will learn about the components and functions of medieval castles, draw our own, and work together to construct one out of cardboard boxes. Campers will participate in building challenges like trying to make the strongest bridge out of popsicle sticks or the highest tower out of pebbles. We’ll look at and discuss images of treehouses to inspire our own designs. Then, after drawing a dream treehouse, we will use found materials to make a small-scale model of it to take home. Throughout these activities, campers will hone creative problem-solving skills and practice working collaboratively - while having a blast! Session 5 - The Great Outdoors ($245)K - 8th GradeJuly 8th - 12th | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Calling all nature and animal lovers! Join us in exploring our beautiful campus and the many plants and animals that call it home! On our hunts for different habitats, we’ll go on adventures in the wetlands, hikes in the woods, and visits to the flower and vegetable gardens. We’ll learn how to make the campus - and our own backyards! - more hospitable to wildlife by planting a butterfly garden and making our own bird feeders. Over the week, we’ll observe, identity, and learn about the birds that visit. We’ll also go on fossil hunts and then learn about our finds. Scavenger hunts will challenge us to look more closely at our surroundings to find and gather leaf, flower, and feather specimens, which we’ll add to our field journals and use for art projects. We’ll create faces on trees using clay, and integrate natural materials we collect on our hunts, like leaves, pinecones, pebbles, and flowers as hair, mustaches, eyes, noses, etc. We will sample food from the garden and even make our own popsicles with the blackberries we pick! Session 6 - World Travelers ($245)K - 8th GradeJuly 15th - 19th | 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.Let’s travel the world! Campers will explore many interesting countries through the cuisine, art, music, fashion, games, and folklore of these cultures, picking up vocabulary specific to those places along the way. We’ll gain a deeper appreciation of these cultures by making our own sumi ink paintings, flamenco dancers’ fans, Lascaux-inspired cave paintings, Buddhist monk-inspired mandalas, Koinobori (Japanese fish kites), Mexican piñatas, and Guatemalan worry dolls. We’ll also learn about the geography, climate, and fascinating animals of each new country we explore, delving into geography and points of interest using virtual tours on Google Earth. We will even get to try our hands in the kitchen, working as a team to prepare foods from a handful of different cultures around the world! “Camp Curious” Specialty Camps Throw A Vessel ($235)4th - 8th GradeJune 3rd - 7th | 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Learn the basics of throwing in this program designed to introduce campers to the wheel. Campers will focus on becoming familiar with technique while learning how to center clay and pull a wall to make a vessel (form). When not on the wheel, campers will engage in drawing vessels using a variety of media, and one day will focus on a group project using our new extruder and slab roller. Pieces will be bisque fired. An additional morning for glazing will be determined once registrations are received. Limited enrollment due to the artistic process and one-on-one time with the instructor. Pair this camp with a half-day of FUNdamentals of Art for a full day on the Goshen Campus ($270) Dungeons and Dragons ($210)4th - 8th GradeJune 3rd - 7th | 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop game of teamwork, creativity, imagination, and overcoming adversity. It can be adapted and tailored to a variety of players, interests, and skill levels with simple concepts that can span increasing complex rules as players grow more familiar with the system and game play. We will build our own characters and set off on an adventure for fame and glory! From novice to master, all are welcome! Pair this camp with a half-day of FUNdamentals of Art for a full day on the Goshen Campus ($245) Middle School Musical Theater ($490)5th - 8th GradeJune 10th - 21st | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (2 weeks)Ideal for campers with a passion for theater, this two-week program encompasses everything necessary to produce the musical. Campers have the option to perform or work on the crew (rising 9th graders are eligible for both cast and crew). This year’s production is Getting To Know Footloose and culminates in a production for family and friends. With roots in the 1984 film Footloose, Getting to Know Footloose is a high-energy musical about protesting injustice and learning to heal after a tragedy. The story is based on events that took place in the small community of Elmore City, Oklahoma in 1981, where an 88-year-old ban on public dancing was repealed after a challenge by students in the senior class at the local high school. While the movie was not a musical, it became one when it premiered on Broadway in 1998. Footloose received four 1999 Tony Award nominations and ran for more than 700 performances. With its much-loved, energetic music and its entertaining and emotionally engaging story, it's a musical that will captivate generations of audiences. Camp Invention® ($235)K - 6th GradeJune 24th - 29th | 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.Camp Invention® is a nationally acclaimed summer program where STEM concepts come to life. Led by St. Francis School teachers, campers have the opportunity to become innovators through teamwork and immersive, hands-on creative problem-solving. Highlights of the 2019 program, Supercharged™, include: Creative Problem Solving: Campers team up to rebuild ships and design underwater equipment in Deep Sea Mystery™. STEM Application: In DIY Orbot™, we explore circuit boards, motors, and gears as we design a remote-control bot to take on obstacles from sports to dance. Innovation: We collaborate with inventor superheroes and take on roles of engineers, fabricators, and innovators to conquer villains in Innovation Force™. Confidence: Campers become successful entrepreneurs in Farm Tech™, coding bots to turn a polluted wasteland into a money-making machine and create devices to save animals. With the help of a cheerful Mother Goose, they learn to make the best out of life‘s ups and downs. Bring Your Story to Life ($210)5th - 8th GradeJuly 15th - 19th | 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.Get ready for a fun and meaningful camp experience through project-based learning! With video cameras now in everything from phones to tablets to computers, we’re seeing more and more students interested in the filmmaking process. During this week of hands-on instruction, campers will gain exposure to all forms of film, visual arts, and animation. Collaboration is key this week, as we begin by developing story ideas within small production teams and then work together to tell stories via shooting and editing techniques to create a cohesive movie and apply the design thinking process to peer critiquing. The week culminates with completing a final (passion) project of the camper’s choice. Activities include basic stop-motion and green screen workshops. Campers leave with the production skills required to create a movie from start to finish, along with footage of the camper’s very own short film! Join us this summer for a fun-filled camp of Transformation Creations! Campers will love the mash-up of combination models that can be rebuilt into something different. These awesome 2-in-1 models will include exciting characters, robots, vehicles, and more. Working in small groups, between three and six students, campers will strengthen math, reading, and/or writing skills. Children who benefit from academic review during the summer can do so for two hours a week for six weeks, all while having fun! Campers can combine academic camps with any of our other K - 8th camps for a full day on the Goshen Campus.
