Kid's Summer Art Camp at SCGA: Aug 1 - Aug 5 - Sumter, SC

Mon, Aug 1, 2016 - Fri, Aug 5, 2016 Summer Art Camp at the SCGA Morning Classes: 9:00am - 12:00pm: Fun in the Mud (Ages 4-7) In this beginner’s pottery class students will be introduced to different kinds of clay, the pottery wheel, a variety of hand-building skills and colorful glazes. We will draw inspiration for our creations from children’s stories as we combine art, storytelling and play in this unique class offering. What I Really Want to do is Paint! (Ages 4-7) Miss Ashley will work with students to develop basic painting skills and a love for painting, along with concepts like the color wheel, line, texture and value in this foundational painting class perfect for our youngest artists. This class is designed to help prepare students for future art classes and to give them hands-on experience with paint media and tools while having a blast squishing, squirting and smushing paint onto canvas. Artistic Assemblage (Ages 9 & up) Local artist Trisha King will guide this set of projects in which students will use stretched canvases and canvas boards as bases for their assemblages and will refinish a picture frame. Students will incorporate found objects, buttons and costume jewelry and a variety of mixed media to create works that convey meaning and highlight sentimental keepsakes. Afternoon Classes: 1:00pm - 4:00pm: Color Pencil Drawing (Ages 10 & up) In this foundational drawing class, Mr. Hickmon will guide students in the use of Prismacolor pencils to create intensely colorful, life-like drawings through the application of color layering, blending and lifting techniques in addition to basic drawing instruction. This is a class for students who are serious about and dedicated to learning the art of drawing. Creative Painting Techniques (Ages 8-12) Artist Connie Brennan will lead students in this inventive class bringing to life vivid, dreamlike images of butterflies, flowers, angels, lizards and much more through the use of rich, contrasting colors and textures along with precise stencils and a variety of other tools – an approach to painting that yields beautiful, unique results. Youth Pottery (Ages 8 & up) In one of our most popular summer offerings, students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of making decorative and functional ceramic art using traditional hand-building techniques and throwing functional vessels on the potter’s wheel. Students will learn about glazing and surface decoration and all artwork will be completed with colorful, shiny glazes. This is a special way to introduce your child to fine art! We are proud to have served the Sumter community for nearly 5 decades. We offer accomplished teaching artists, small class sizes, projects in a wide variety of media and excellent facilities including three beautiful galleries with art on exhibition year round for students to enjoy and learn from. Cost $115 for prospective members, $105 for members (all supplies included) Space is limited to 12 per class. $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee is due at time of registration. This will be applied to the cost of the class.
