Well before summer camp starts, you can start preparing your child for summer camp. Below are 4 of the basic hygiene skills that your child will need to stay healthy while they are at summer camp.

Sorting laundry

While your child may not be required to do a load of laundry while they are at summer camp, it is still important for them to know how to sort their laundry. For example, your child should be taught to keep their clean clothes separate from their dirty clothes by putting their dirty clothes in a mesh bag. Additionally, your child should be taught to hang up all wet clothes and allow them to dry before they store them in their dirty clothes bag.

Showering On Their Own

If your child is going to camp at a young age, they may still be used to taking baths instead of showers. Most camps only offer shower facilities and will not have bathtubs. It is important to transition your child to a shower before sending them to camp. Additionally, you will want to make sure that your child is fully capable of washing well on their own, without the help of an adult.

Brushing Teeth

It is important that your child gets in the habit of brushing their teeth every day without you reminding them. While some camp counselors may have a special tooth brushing routine with their campers, others will expect campers to remember to brush their teeth on their own.

To ensure that your child knows how long to brush their teeth, consider investing in a toothbrush that lights up, plays music, or vibrates for the recommended two minutes of brushing. This not only helps your child brush for the correct amount of time, but also makes brushing more fun so they are more likely to remember to do it when they are away.

Washing Dishes

While your child is at camp, they may be expected to help clear their dishes from the table. They may be asked to scrape leftovers into a trash can and place their dish for washing. During cook outs, they may be asked to clean their dishware by hand. It is important that your child is comfortable taking care of their dishes and washing by hand.

Teaching your child these basic hygiene skills early will ensure that your child is ready for camp when summer comes.
