Computer Science Discoveries (CS Discoveries) is an introductory computer science course appropriate for ages 11-15. The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering a variety of Computer Science concepts such as variables, algorithms, problem solving, and game design. At the end of the week, students will have designed their own apps and built their own websites and games. What Students Learn: Problem Solving: Explore the problem-solving process and the different ways humans and computers solve problems. Web Development (Track 1): Discover the languages powering the web. Build your own websites in HTML and CSS using Web Lab. Animations & Games (Track 2): Learn the powerful constructs underlying programming languages. Build interactive games in JavaScript using Game Lab. Tools Used Web Lab Web Lab is a browser-based text editor for building web pages in HTML and CSS. It features a text editor with many helpful tools for creating and debugging HTML and CSS code, including a live preview of the web page that updates in real time and the ability to publish the completed web page to its own unique URL. Game Lab Game Lab is a programming environment for developing animations and games using JavaScript. Students can program using either blocks or text and instantly switch between either mode. Game Lab allows for activities with a scoped toolbox of commands that focuses attention on the specific blocks and concepts being introduced in that lesson.
